Most Filipino teens spend their time on sports, academic studies, and some hobbies.
When he was 12 years old, John Carlo Delos Reyes, better known as "Caloy," from Talisay City, Cebu, took photos of their next-door neighbor’s chickens.
He then shared those pictures on Facebook for fun. Someone later became interested and commented on his post, asking for the chickens' price.
That was a eureka moment for Caloy, especially as a high school student hooked to computer games.
For every chicken he sold, he would earn profit ranging from PHP10 to PHP20. However, this amount was only enough for computer games.
When he entered university in 2012, most of his classmates were already using smartphones. He had to strive hard to also own a modern gadget. From poultry, he ventured into a mobile phone business.
There, he could earn PHP500- PHP1000, which he used to support his studies. His income from this business also allowed him to buy his first-ever smartphone.
Later on, Caloy began trading gadgets for animals. For instance, he would exchange a PHP3,000 worth of device with a koi fish. During his junior tertiary studies, he got a blue native parrot and traded it for another animal - an American pitbull.
However, his parents didn't allow him to raise the said breed in their home, so he asked for a friend to adopt the dog.
As time went by, Caloy started gaining PHP10,000 in profit. He acquired more breeds and personally fostered them. These include a Husky, a Doberman, and an American bully. In 2017, he reached PHP80,000 in net profit. This year (2020), he got an Alaskan malamute.
But as in any enterprise, Caloy encountered setbacks in his animal business. Recently, one of his dogs died. It was the second dog he lost.
However, Caloy does not let business frustrations get the better of him. He takes comfort in the thought that, if his business does not succeed, he still has the dogs and they can be his pets.
