Dogs and humans share a chemistry that dates back tens of thousands of years.
According to research by John Archer of the University of Central Lancashire, about 40 percent of dog owners consider their dogs to be family. This suggests universal compatibility between the two species.

It is not known precisely when the special evolutionary connection between dogs and humans began.
Even though humans and dogs' oldest remains were discovered together 14,000 years ago, some findings are said to be twice as old.
According to ancient traces of canine-like creatures, the dog evolved millions of years ago.
The mitochondrial DNA of dogs and wolves is 99.9% identical. Most domestic dogs have been genetically isolated from wolves for 100,000 years.

It may or may not be the case, but some believe that humans set out to tame dogs by breeding them for specific traits.
It's possible that dogs, which are hunters by nature, started following humans for food. The human-dog bond strengthened over time and blossomed at that point.

Colin Groves of the Australian National University, in Canberra, said, "The human-dog relationship amounts to a very long-lasting symbiosis. Dogs acted as human's alarm systems, trackers, and hunting aides, garbage disposal facilities, hot water bottles, and children's guardians and playmates. Humans provided dogs with food and security."
Groves continued, "The relationship was stable over 100,000 years or so, and intensified in the Holocene into mutual domestication. Humans domesticated dogs and dogs domesticated humans."

In addition to companionship, scientific evidence has proven that pet ownership offers numerous health benefits. Dogs inspire their owners to relax, bring down their blood pressure, and keep them physically active.
Dogs also perform tasks for humans. They assist the mentally or physically challenged, secure important property, and guard us against danger.
