Britney Spears' Case is Cited by House Republicans as Example of Conservatorship Abuse

As a result of Britney Spears' plight, House Republican Matt Gaetz wants a high-profile committee of the chamber to hold a hearing on court-ordered conservatorship.

Florida congress member Gaetz urged the powerful House Judiciary Committee, which oversees the Constitution and federal courts, to free the Pop Princess.

On March 8, Gaetz and Ohio representative Jim Jordan joined forces to inform committee chair Jerry Nadler that the documentary "Framing Britney Spears" exemplifies why the current system must be reformed.

The conservatorship of Spears, in effect since 2008, is perhaps the clearest example of how the arrangement entails the deprivation of freedom, he said.

A particular target of Gaetz's criticism might have been Spears' father Jamie, with whom the singer has sparred for the last year trying to block him from being reinstalled as her top conservator. In the meantime, however, Spears has lost the fight.

"Framing Britney Spears" provoked intense criticism that her conservatorship was wrongly granted, leading to a wider #FreeBritney movement by Britney Armies.
