According to California law enforcement officials, Britney Spears' staff member claimed the singer hit her.

The employee made the claim following a heated argument at Britney's house on Monday.

The Ventura Country Sheriff's Office said it will present its investigation findings to prosecutors so they can consider misdemeanor battery charges.

"Overblown" is how the pop star's lawyer described the accusation.

In California, misdemeanor battery means any intentional and unlawful physical contact with another individual.

During the encounter, Britney is said to have slapped the employee's cellphone from their hands.

The BBC was emailed by her lawyer Mathew S Rosengart, who explained it was "nothing more than a manufactured 'he said, she said' regarding a cell phone, with no striking and obviously no injury whatsoever.

Mathew pointed out that anybody can make an accusation, but that this should have been settled right away.

Last month, Britney hired Mathew to help her end her father Jamie Spears' control over her life and finances, more than a decade after he took legal control of her life following concerns about her mental health.
