In the midst of the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic, Taylor Swift, 30, surprised her legion of fans with the release of her eighth studio album, "Folklore," on July 24.

"In isolation my imagination has run wild and this album is the result," Swift shared on Instagram, "a collection of songs and stories that flowed like a stream of consciousness. Picking up a pen was my way of escaping into fantasy, history, and memory."

"I’ve told these stories to the best of my ability with all the love, wonder, and whimsy they deserve," she added. "Now it’s up to you to pass them down. folklore is out now."

The 16-track album features production from Aaron Dessner, Jack Antonoff, and Swift herself. "Folklore" departs from the mainstream pop sound of the acclaimed singer's previous releases.

The album is an indie folk, electro-folk, alternative rock, and chamber pop album driven by guitars and pianos. Lyrically, it includes brilliant storytelling that details third-person narratives. Along with the album launch, "Cardigan" was released as the first single. The official music video of the song was directed by Swift herself.

On July 23, the singer took to Twitter to make a surprise announcement that she'd be releasing "Folklore" at midnight Friday. "[It's] an entire brand new album of songs I've poured all of my whims, dreams, fears, and musings into," she tweeted.

"Folklore" follows "Lover," which was released in August 2019. The latest album earned extensive critical praise upon release. Swift's narrative songwriting often revolves around her own life, and has received widespread recognitions and media coverage.

The singer is one of the world's best-selling music artists of all time, having sold over 50 million albums and 150 million singles worldwide. Her awards include 10 Grammy Awards, seven Guinness World Records, and an Emmy Award.
