The cause of death for C.J. Harris, a former contestant on "American Idol," was made public on January 19th.

As reported by PEOPLE, the star passed away at the age of 31 due to a heart attack on January 15th.

Harris gained national recognition when he competed on Season 13 of American Idol in 2014, where he impressed the judges with his cover of "Soulshine" by The Allman Brothers Band.

He made it to the top 13 finalists before being eliminated in sixth place.

Following his time on the show, Harris went on tour with the other top 10 contestants and even performed at the Grand Ole Opry with one of his inspirations, Darius Rucker.

In 2016, he faced legal issues after being arrested in a drug bust and charged with distributing controlled substances.

He released his debut single "In Love" in 2019, and had hinted at new music before his untimely death.
