At the 78th Cannes Film Festival, Nicole Kidman was awarded the prestigious 2025 Women in Motion Award by Kering and the Festival de Cannes.
This accolade recognizes her significant contributions to cinema and her advocacy for female representation in the industry.
In 2017, Kidman pledged to work with a female director every 18 months.
Since then, she has collaborated with 27 female directors, surpassing her initial commitment.
Her efforts aim to address the underrepresentation of women in filmmaking and to provide them with more opportunities.
Despite these strides, the broader industry statistics remain concerning.
As of 2024, only 13.6% of top-grossing U.S. films were directed by women, up from a mere 4% in 2017.
Kidman emphasized the importance of mentoring and supporting female directors to help them thrive creatively.
Beyond gender representation, Kidman also addressed ageism in Hollywood.
She highlighted the challenges faced by seasoned artists and called for continued belief and investment in artists regardless of age.
Her return to Cannes after eight years was marked by her appearance at the Women in Motion dinner, where she received the award.
The event also honored emerging talent Marianna Brennand with a €50,000 grant.
What do you think? Is Hollywood making genuine progress in gender equality, or are these accolades merely symbolic?
