Snoop Dogg Apologizes After 'Lightyear' Comments Spark Outrage: 'Teach Me How to Learn'

Following a wave of criticism, legendary rapper Snoop Dogg has issued a public apology for recent comments he made about LGBTQ+ representation in the Disney-Pixar film "Lightyear."

The controversy began after Snoop Dogg appeared on the "It's Giving" podcast and shared an experience of watching the 2022 animated film with his grandson.

During the podcast, Snoop Dogg recounted how his grandson was confused by a scene showing a same-sex couple, a character named Alisha Hawthorne and her wife, raising a child.

"My grandson, in the middle of the movie is like, 'Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She's a woman!'" he recalled.

The rapper admitted the exchange "fed me up," adding that he felt "scared to go to the movies" because he was "thrown in the middle of s that I don't have an answer for."

His remarks quickly went viral, igniting a firestorm of debate on social media. Many users accused the rapper of homophobia, and the backlash grew to the point where some called for him to be removed from an upcoming Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Final performance.

In the face of the mounting criticism, Snoop Dogg took to the comments section of an Instagram post to set the record straight.

"My bad. I was just caught off guard and had no answer for my grandsons," he wrote. He went on to show support for his LGBTQ+ friends, adding, "All my gay friends [know] what's up they been calling me with love."

In a final note of humility, he apologized for his lack of knowledge, writing, "My bad for not knowing the answers for a 6 yr old... teach me how to learn I'm not perfect."

The original "Lightyear" film was no stranger to controversy, having been banned in several countries for its inclusion of the same-sex couple.

The scene was even briefly removed from the movie before being reinstated after protest from Pixar employees.

In response to Snoop Dogg's recent comments, one of the film's writers, Lauren Gunderson, defended the scene, stating on social media that she was "proud to see a happy queer couple" because "beautiful love like this exists."

The incident highlights a broader societal conversation about the age-appropriateness of certain topics in children's media and the role of parents and creators in guiding these discussions.

What do you think about Snoop Dogg's response? Do you believe children's films should feature diverse representations, and how do you handle these topics with the younger generation?
