When people look back at the massive impact of her second studio album, Stripped, this chart position feels completely wrong. "Fighter" is widely seen as a massive pop-rock masterpiece. It features intense electric guitar work from Dave Navarro, raw and emotional lyrics about overcoming betrayal, and some of the strongest vocal delivery of Aguilera's entire career.
Even though it only hit the top 20 in America, the track performed much better in other parts of the world. It climbed all the way to number three on the official singles charts in both the United Kingdom and Canada. It also reached the top five in countries like Australia, the Netherlands, and Ireland.
Over the years, the song has only grown in respect. Music critics now frequently rank it as one of the greatest empowerment anthems of the 2000s. The Recording Industry Association of America even certified the single double platinum for selling over two million units.
Fans today argue that radio stations and music buyers back then should have pushed the track much higher up the American charts. Songs with this much power and raw emotion rarely come around, and missing out on the top ten in the US feels like a huge miss for mainstream radio at the time.
