In 2014, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello first met while both were touring with Austin Mahone. There was a connection between them even then, they said later.

During a joint interview with V Magazine, Shawn told Camila he never talked to anyone else and that she was the only person who spoke with him.

"Like, you were the only one of everybody on that tour who would say words to me," Shawn added. "Actually, I think if we go into our DMs or something, there's a photo from the day we met, I think."

Together, the two began creating songs. Shawn told Camila in April 2018 that she was his favorite person in the entire world.

The couple confirmed their relationship in July 2019 after they released their hit single "Senorita." After that, they became inseparable.

Shawn said in an interview with Glamour, "Honestly, I wanna say I wanna talk to you guys about this stuff, but it's not just me in the relationship. There's another person involved, and I can't say things that I feel. It's not just me deciding, you know?"

Despite keeping his word on respecting his girlfriend's privacy, Shawn has disclosed one big secret to his fans.

Shawn told People about a frightening moment with Camila in June 2021. As he recalled, the singer got into an argument with Camila, screaming at her and ultimately upsetting her.

"I raised my voice at her and she was like, 'I don't like it when you raise your voice. Why did you raise your voice?'" Shawn said. "And I got so defensive."

Then Shawn explained how it felt to be the wronged party. He said, "I was like, 'I wasn't raising my voice at you!' And I did raise my voice at her. And then I felt her shrink and I felt me grow and I was like, 'Oh god, this is the worst.'"

Shawn added that he is concerned about his behavior from a general standpoint, noting that he is afraid of being evil and doesn't want to do anything terrible. They eventually got over it, fortunately.

In December 2020, Shawn opened up about what was going on in his heart for Camila.

"It takes a lot of courage to tell the woman that you love that you love her," the singer told Access Hollywood. "I had five years of fear of getting rejected by her that just stopped me from doing it every time — or just confidence."

"I think, you know, it just took a lot. It took a long time of preparing," he added. "I mean, I had a five-year warmup to finally be able to tell her how I felt!"
