Longest-Reigning British Monarch Queen Elizabeth Dies at 96

The eldest son of the monarch, Prince Charles, will succeed her immediately.

In the 20th and 21st centuries, Queen Elizabeth II was one of the most iconic figures. She died at the age of 96.

In an official statement on Thursday, Buckingham Palace announced, "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon."

"The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow," the statement added.
