On January 7th, footage was released by the city of Memphis depicting officers utilizing excessive force during a traffic stop involving 29-year-old Tyre Nichols.

The footage, obtained from a SkyCop camera and officers' body cameras, shows officers using tasers, pepper spray, and physical violence against Nichols.

The footage has been widely criticized by law enforcement and attorneys representing Nichols' family, who have described it as "absolutely appalling," "alarming," and "unconscionable."

The videos depict officers kicking Nichols in the face, striking him with a baton, punching him multiple times, and kicking him in the abdomen.

Nichols tragically passed away on January 10th, three days after the incident, following what Memphis Police referred to as a "confrontation."

In response to this incident, five officers of the Memphis Police Department have been fired and indicted on charges including second-degree murder, aggravated assault-acting in concert, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of official misconduct, and one count of official oppression.
