Lizzo was notably absent from the highly-regarded MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) in 2023 amid her ongoing legal battle involving allegations of sexual and racial harassment.

Fans speculated that the artist chose to skip the ceremony, possibly to avoid potentially uncomfortable situations.

In contrast to her five nominations at the previous year's event, Lizzo didn't receive any nominations this time around, mainly due to her focus on a global tour rather than releasing new music.

Lizzo faced a significant shock when her former backup dancers, Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams, and Noelle Rodriguez, accused her of sexual harassment, creating a hostile work environment, and discrimination.

This lawsuit targeted not only Lizzo but also her company, Big Grrrl Big Touring, Inc. (BGBT), and Shirlene Quigley, the leader of her dance team.

In response to these allegations, Lizzo strongly refuted the claims of sexual harassment and bullying made by her former dancers in the lawsuit.

She defended her work ethic, principles, and respectful behavior, asserting that her character had been unfairly criticized.
