In a candid revelation, Sir Elton John has opened up about a deeply emotional moment during the creation of his latest album, Who Believes in Angels?.
The 78-year-old music legend disclosed that while composing the song "When This Old World Is Done With Me," he was overwhelmed by its poignant lyrics, leading to a 45-minute breakdown.
The song, penned by longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin, delves into themes of mortality and legacy.
Elton recounted on the SmartLess podcast, "I wrote a song at the end of the album and I got Bernie Taupin's lyrics called 'When This Old World Is Done With Me.' And so I'm writing the verse, like, 'Oh, this is really pretty.' And then I get to the chorus and of course it's about my death."
Reflecting on his age and family, Elton added, "When you get to my age, which is near 100, you ... ?' You've got children, you've got a ... husband... you just think about mortality."
The emotional recording session was captured on film and will be featured in an upcoming documentary, providing fans with an intimate look into Elton's creative process and personal reflections.
Despite the somber themes, Elton describes the album as his best work in 40 years, crediting collaborator Brandi Carlile for inspiring him to pursue this project.
