In the summer issue of the Gay Times, Dove Cameron talks openly about her decision to come out as queer and the significance of being close to her LGBTQ+ fans.

"I've hinted about my sexuality for years while being afraid to spell it out for everybody," Dove said.

As to who she is, Dove said that she was never in doubt of it. The singer, however, said she was afraid people wouldn't accept her and that she had an odd narrative about how no one would believe her.

Dove explained that she began to question if she could be as authentic and true to herself as her celebrity role models, including Ben Platt, Kristen Stewart, and Cara Delevingne.

"It felt like something that I could never talk about," she said. "I feel like the industry has changed a lot in terms of having room for people with platforms to be human and not to be picked apart.

"I was really nervous to come out, and one day, I dropped it because I was behaving like somebody who was out and I realized I wasn't."

It was during an Instagram Live in August 2020 that Dove first opened up about her sexuality.

"I went on Instagram Live and said 'Guys, I really needed to explain something to you. Maybe I haven't said it, but I'm super queer. This is something I want to represent through my music because it's who I am,'" she said.

The relationship that Dove has with her fans has been unreal ever since that moment. She described it as having created a secure environment without going into details.

As Dove comes out as queer, she hoped to encourage her fans in similar situations to live their own lives as they truly are.

"I'm not a label person, but I would say that I am queer and that's probably my most accurate way to represent myself," she stated.

As far as coming out was concerned, Dove said it was more about being a complete person rather than choosing who she wanted to date.

Her goal now is to love herself, be herself every single day, and not edit herself depending on the room she is in. No apology is necessary for who she is, she said.

Dove is best known for playing the two characters in the Disney Channel comedy series “Liv and Maddie.”

As a result of her outstanding performance on the show, she won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Performer in Children's Programming.
