Rising rapper Ice Spice has signed a major record deal with Capitol Records and 10K Projects while retaining control of her masters and publishing.

This bold move was made possible through a strategic negotiation process, backed by a strong team.

Generating Buzz and Gaining Exposure

Ice Spice began creating buzz in summer 2022 with the release of her hit records “Munch” and “Bikini Bottom,” which were distributed through independent company Create Music Group.

Her manager, James Rosemond Jr., told Billboard that partnering with CMG was ideal for Ice Spice, as it opened up more exposure opportunities.

Retaining Ownership and Control

Despite receiving interest from multiple record labels, including Capitol Records and 10K Projects, Rosemond wanted to ensure that Ice Spice would have ownership of her music and maintain full creative control.

He enlisted the help of an entertainment attorney, Leon Morabia, to negotiate the deal. The result was a success, as Ice Spice secured a record deal with the imprints while retaining control of her masters and publishing.

A Bold Business Tactic

Rosemond attributes his bold business tactics to his upbringing as the son of hip-hop mogul James “Jimmy Henchman” Rosemond, which allowed him to learn about contracts and approach labels.

He encouraged Ice Spice to hold off on signing deals until they had built a strong foundation for negotiation.

Ice Spice’s approach to securing a major record deal while retaining control of her masters and publishing is an inspiration to up-and-coming artists.

Her success demonstrates the power of strategic negotiation and a willingness to take calculated risks.
