Brittney Griner Returns to Court with Phoenix Mercury After Release from Detention

The Phoenix Mercury has confirmed that Brittney Griner has returned to the court with the team after her release from detention just two months ago. The WNBA player had been held in Russia for allegedly smuggling "narcotic drugs".

The Mercury released images of Griner practicing, showing her wearing a black WNBA tank top, gold chain, matching black and purple shorts worn over dark purple leggings, and with a slight fade on the sides of her short hair.

Griner, 32, will play under a one-year, $165,100 free-agent contract, having last played for the Mercury during the 2021 season.


During her career, she has averaged 17.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 1.8 assists. Griner expressed her intention to return to the team in an Instagram post in December 2022, shortly after her return to the United States from Russia.
